Sealand, officially the Principality of Sealand is one of the most recognized micronations, as well as one of the most popular micronations in the world. It is based on HM Fort Roughs in the North Sea, an abandoned WW2 anti-aircraft sea platform, and was established on September 2nd 1967 by Roy Paddy Bates after talking to his lawyer about his pirate radio station he had setup on the fort.
The Principality of Sealand was founded when Roy Paddy Bates occupied the HM Fort Roughs for his pirate radio company Radio Essex, yet he never broadcasted on the HM Fort Roughs, and instead founded the Principality of Sealand on September 2nd 1967.
In August 1978 the self proclaimed prime minister of Sealand, Alexander Achenbach, hired several German/Dutch mercenaries to attack Sealand while Roy Paddy Bates and his family (besides Michael) were staying in England. They took Michael hostage, but Michael managed to take back control of Sealand and capture Alexander Achenbach using weapons on the platform. Achenbach was then accused of treason in Sealand was then held unless he paid DM (German Mark or Deutschmark) 75,000 or £23,000. The governments of the Netherlands, Austria and Germany petitioned the British government for his release, but the United Kingdom disavowed his imprisonment. Germany's ambassador to the United Kingdom then visited Sealand over the release of Alexander Achenbach, but was declined and Roy went on to claim Germany's de facto recognition of Sealand.
